The son of Mexican tenor David Portilla, he began studying voice in 1986 in his native Mexico City. In 1989, he already took part in the world premiere of the opera Aura by Mario Lavista at the Palacio de Bellas Artes. He then sang around Mexico for a few years. In 1993, he made his US debut with the New Jersey Opera. In 1994, he sang a lot of small roles in San Francisco, and then embarked on a good career. In the order of his respective debuts: Tel Aviv, Lyon, Bordeaux, the Palacio de Bellas Artes again and again, New York City Opera, Buenos Aires (Teatro Colón), Paris (Opéra de Bastille), Washington, Tokyo, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Cologne, Bologna, Metropolitan Opera (debut as Rodolfo in 2000), Oviedo, Rio de Janeiro, Cagliari, Bregenz Festival, Pittsburgh, Rome, Cremona, Aspen Music Festival, Houston, Madrid (Teatro Real and Teatro Calderón), Sevilla, Modena, Torino, Palm Beach, Cleveland, Toulon and Palermo. I didn't find any performances after 2009.

His repertory included, again in the order of his respective debuts, Arturo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Ismaele, Cavaradossi, Alfredo, Gabriele Adorno, Macduff, Duca, Fernando (Doña Francisquita), Ruggero (La rondine), Pinkerton, Javier (Luisa Fernanda), Rodolfo, Edgardo, Rodolfo (Luisa Miller), Maurizio, Parpignol (!), Don José, Lázaro (La Dolores), Enzo Grimaldo, Manrico, the title role in Ambrosio by José Antonio Guzmán, Don Carlo, Turiddu, Jorge (Marina) and des Grieux (Manon Lescaut). He sang also a lot of concert music.
