Born in Uruguay into a family of Italian origin, he began studying voice already at 14 years old at the opera school of the Teatro Solís in Montevideo, and then moved to Italy to complete his studies. From his 1994 debut at La Scala (as Duca di Mantova, under Riccardo Muti), he had a long and dignified career. He still has a tight schedule at the time of writing (fall 2024).

After his Scala debut, he went on to sing in Wexford, Cardiff, Detroit, Zürich, Messina, Sevilla, Rome (Teatro dell'Opera), Martina Franca, Buenos Aires (Teatro Colón), Parma, Minneapolis, Berlin (Staatsoper), Trieste, Costa Mesa, San Francisco, São Paulo, Berlin (Deutsche Oper), Dallas, New York City (NYCO), Frankfurt, Bergamo, Verona (Arena), Nice, Palma de Mallorca, Naples (San Carlo), Ferrara, Torre del Lago, Torino, Macerata, Washington, Vienna (Staatsoper), Chicago, San Diego, Florence (Maggio Musicale), Nancy, Geneva, Bologna, Brussels (Monnaie), Palermo, Maó, Bilbao, Catania, Avenches, Barcelona (Liceu), Lausanne, Avignon, Montevideo (Teatro Solís), Hamburg, Leipzig, Tokyo, Salerno, London (Covent Garden), Paris (Opéra Bastille), Orange, Toronto, Bordeaux, Beijing, Muscat, Montevideo (SODRE), Antwerp, Düsseldorf, Hong Kong, Bari (Teatro Petruzzelli), Macau, Nagoya, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Budapest (Müpa), Venice (La Fenice), Budapest (Margitsziget/open air), Shanghai, Budapest (Erkel Színház), Victoria/Malta, Munich (Prinzregententheater), Cagliari, Zagreb, Málaga, Belluno. At many of the more famous theaters, he sang but few performances; the centers of his career were the Arena di Verona, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Palermo.

He sang primarily the Italian standard repertory from Norma to Turandot, with some interspersed rarities: Gloria by Cilea, Saffo by Pacini, Le villi, Oberto, conte di San Bonifacio, Un giorno di regno, Giovanna d'Arco, Germania, L'oracolo by Leoni, La Wally/i>.
